Theft Offenses
(Includes shoplifting, retail theft, receiving stolen property, credit card fraud.)
In a theft, an individual intentionally and without claim of right takes another's property without their consent and with the intent to permanently deprive the owner of the possession of the property. If the value of the property taken is $500.00 or less, the crime may be classified as a misdemeanor. If the theft is of larger amount, the case may be charged as a felony offense. Unlike robbery, theft does not involve the use of force. Unlike burglary, the crime does not involve unlawful entry.
